Abstract
632,132. Electric soldering-irons. WILSON, J. M., and EPSEM, Ltd. Jan. 29, 1948, No. 2660. [Class 39(iii)] An electric soldering iron comprises a hollow carbon electrode a with an internal insulating sleeve e within which is mounted a metal rod f, the tip f<SP>1</SP> of which protrudes beyond the end of the electrode a, the rod f and electrode a being connected to opposite poles of an electric supply whereby the circuit between them is completed by contact of the iron against the work to be soldered. The circuit is from one of two leads l in the handle d, through a metal shank c and a sleeve b, to which the electrode a is secured, through the work and the rod f, which is spring mounted at j, to the other conductor l. In one modification, a copper bit is secured to the end f<SP>1</SP> of the rod f and is normally retained out of 'contact with the electrode a by the action of the spring j. On pressure being applied between the iron and the work, the bit contacts the electrode a, and the circuit is completed. In another modification the rod f is fixed with respect to the electrode a, the circuit being completed by inclining the iron to make both the tip f<SP>1</SP> and the electrode a contact the work.
