Abstract
628,657. Soldering-irons. LEWIS, J. O., and GRANT, A. K. April 26, 1947, No. 11234. [Class 39(iii)] In an electrically-heated soldering-iron the bit 10 is made integral with a former 11 on which is wound a heating element 19 made of a material, e.g. iron, whose resistance increases substantially with increase in temperature at or about normal soldering temperature. The use of such a material has the effect of stabilising the bit temperature and eliminates deterioration of the bit and consequent need for renewal. The iron wire 19 is insulated by glass fibre sleeving and surrounded by insulating packing 22, e.g. asbestos wool, and is enclosed in a tube 20 clamped between a washer 21 and a front handle support 13 both of ceramic or similar material. Connection to the element 19 is by a support rod 12 and a lead 19a both passing through a second tube 15 held between the support 13 and a rear part 14 of synthetic-resin-impregnated laminated fabric material. A metal rest 23 and a handle formed by a coiled compression spring 16 are located between parts 13 and 14.
