[Also in Division H5] Maximum heat transfer to the bit 22a of an electric soldering iron is ensured by mounting the bit on a copper rod 24 projecting from a copper tube 10 forming part of the heating element unit (see Division H5). The tube 10 is located within an outer iron tube 10a which is counterbored to receive a copper or preferably silver tube 23 which contacts the bit. In a modified arrangement a bit comprising a shell of stainless steel or nickel with a plug of copper or silver similar to the rod 24 is cut away at opposite locations down to the plug to provide opposite " flats " to which are silver-soldered or brazed two silver strip insertions extending from the tube 10.
