Abstract
465,614. Expansion thermometers. YOUNG, R. C. K. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31083. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1934. [Class 97 (iii)] A pyrometer comprises a metal sheath the thermal expansions and contractions of which vary the resistance of a plurality of members contained within the sheath, the temperature being indicated or recorded by an instrument in circuit with the resistance and a source of electric current. As shown the sheath 10, containing carbon resistance blocks 15 insulated from it by mica 16, has one end closed by a cap 12 and the other end screwed into a body 11 made of material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Invar." The body 11 carries an adjustable end piece 13 carrying a contact member 14 and a terminal 23 by which contact with one end of the resistance is effected, the pressure on the resistances being adjustable by screwing the end piece 13. The body 11 carries a terminal 25 electrically connected to the other end of the resistance by means of the metal sheath and the end cap 12. The resistance is included in a circuit containing a source of electricity, a switch, a voltmeter, a variable resistance and a galvanometer to indicate the temperature. The sheath 10 may be surrounded by heat-resisting material such as silica and the carbon blocks may be partially or wholly replaced by metal plates.
