Abstract
867,712. Measuring thermal radiation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 30, 1959 [July 1, 1958], No. 21088/58. Addition to 834,134. Class 40(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] A thermopile is used to measure thermal radiation from a line across a moving web. The hot junctions 1 of the thermopile are situated behind a slit 4 in an otherwise closed cavity 3 with heat conducting walls which may be of aluminium. The cold junctions are embedded in an electrically insulating resin 5 in thermal contact with aluminium bars 6. Connections are made to an indicator by the wires 7. The arrangement is stated to give an e.m.f. which is a direct measure of the incident radiation and is independent of the ambient temperature. The cavity may be divided into sections each with its own thermopile to determine the variation in radiation intensity across the beam.
