Abstract

716,780. Tubular heat - exchangers, ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. June 29, 1950 [July 25, 1949], No. 24197/53. Divided out of 716,701. Class 64(3) Relates to tubular heat-exchangers in which the external fluid flowing over a bank of straight tubes has at all places in the tube bank a flow component at right angles to the tubes. According to the invention, baffle plates are provided downstream of the tube bank and are inclined at an angle other than a right angle to the plane defined by the direction of flow of the external fluid through the bank and the axial direction of the tubes. It is stated that this baffle arrangement is such that-the loud audible whistle occuring in such heat exchangers is reduced or avoided. Figs. 1 and 2 show such baffles 15 provided in a heat exchanger of the straight through type. Fig. 3 similarly shows the baffles 24 provided in apparatus incorporating an annular tube bank. These heat exchangers may have additional baffles (e.g. baffles 13 Figs. 1 and 2) arranged in the manner described in Specification 716,701.
