Abstract

716,701. Tubular heat - exchangers, ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. June 29, 1950 [July 25, 1949], No. 19560/49. Class 64(3) Relates to tubular heat-exchangers in which the external fluid flowing over a bank of straight tubes, has at all places in the tube bank a flow component in a direction at right angles to the tubes. According to the invention baffles are associated with the tube bank and are so disposed that they are parallel with the flow direction of the external fluid and transverse to the. direction mutually perpendicular both to the direction of flow of the external fluid and to the axial direction of the tubes, the baffles. being spaced from one another or from a side wall of the apparatus or both at a distance such that the fluid column therebetween is incapable of resonant vibration at the frequency of vortex shedding from the heat exchange tubes, and this it is stated avoids or reduces the loud audible whistle which occures in the operation of such heat exchangers. In Fig. 1 the baffles comprise plates 13 disposed between (as shown) or downstream of the tubes 12 of the heat exchanger. A baffle arrangement for apparatus having an annular bank of tubes is also described. Further baffles 15 arranged in the manner described in Specification 716,780 may be provided downstream of the tube bank.
