Abstract
606,674. Tubular heat - exchangers. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. July 25, 1945, No. 19061. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1944. [Class 64(iii)] In a heat-exchanger wherein one medium flows around superposed rows of parallel tubes 6, 6<1>, 6<11> through which the other medium is passed, the tubes of each row are staggered unsymmetrically with respect to the tubes of rows adjacent thereto in such a manner that the ratio of shortest distance between a tube of one row and one adjacent tube of the following row to the shortest distance between the first mentioned tube and the other adjacent tube of the following row is a ratio in which the two integers have no common divisor and at least one integer is greater than 4, e.g. a ratio of 7:4. With this arrangement the stream 2 flowing between two adjacent tubes of a row is divided by a tube of the following row into two unequal streams 7, 8 and the stream contacts a tube not more than once every third row of tubes. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the heat-exchanger is constructed as a number of individual units with one fluid, e.g. oil, flowing through each unit in a direction transverse to the other fluid, e.g. cooling water, and the units are separated by a hollow partition in which additional cooling water flows.
