Abstract

671,011. Bed-settees. COOPERSMITH, R. Aug. 11, 1950. No. 19985/50. Class 52 (ii). A bed-settee comprises a fixed frame, a mattress frame of four pivoted sections, an upholstery board and supporting frame therefor secured to one of the sections, a metal fabric supported in the mattress frame and additional means for tensioning part of said fabric when the mattress frame is folded to give adequate support to the settee cushions. To the fixed frame 1 is pivoted at 3a the side bars 4, 5 of the first section, the second section bars 6 being pivoted to the bars 5 at 7. The third section bars 8 are pivoted at 9 to the bars 6 and at 11 to the fourth section bars 10 which are connected at their ends by a tranverse bar 12. The bars 8 have secured to them bars 29 suitably braced and provided with an angle bar 41 to support the upholstery board 31. In the unfolded position legs 24 support the fourth section and are pivoted to the bars 10 at 25 the legs 24 being linked to the bars 8 of the third section by pivoted links 26. Legs 13 are pivoted to the second section bars 6 and are linked to the fixed frame 1 by links 15, 17 which are pivoted together at 23 the bent link 17 being also pivoted intermediately to the bars 6 and 6a. Wire fabric 36 is attached on all its edges to the section bars by springs 38 and in addition it is also attached to the bars 41 by springs 39 and links 40 so that when the fourth section is folded over the third section in the process of converting the bed into a settee the wire fabric 37 on the fourth section is tensioned to support more adequately the settee cushions. To fold the mattress frame the bars 10, 12 are lifted and swung over to a position parallel to the bars 6 causing the legs 24 to fold alongside the bars 10. The mattress frame is then lifted as shown in Fig. 4 whereupon the legs 13 begin to fold on to the bars 6 which begin to pivot at 7 about the first section and the links 17 move over. The frame is then moved rearwardly towards the back of fixed frame and downwardly whereupon the upholstery board 31 is brought into alignment with the front board 42 of the fixed frame and the bent ends of the links 17 move to a position to support the free end of the fourth section as shown in Fig. 8. Counter balancing springs 22 are provided as shown.
