SOFA LIT.
Cette invention concerne les sofas lits et vise plus particu- lièrement une construction qui forme support pour la partie du châssis porte- matelas pliable qui est employée comme base pour les coussins servant de siè- ges pour le sofa lorsqu-'il est replié à 1-'intérieur de la monture de ce der- nier.
L'invention comprend une série de barres appropriées articulées ensemble pour former un châssis rectangulaire pourvu d'un treillis de fils métalliques tendus par des ressorts, fixé aux barres articulées qui peuvent toutes être repliées dans la monture du lit sofa et., lorsqu-'il est déployée le châssis est supporté par des pieds articulés au châssis de l'allonge, de telle sorte que le châssis et le treillis sont susceptibles de supporter un matelas. Des dispositions sont prises dans le châssis pour que quand il est replié, certaines parties du treillis métalliques soient maintenues tendues et supportées de telle sorte que les coussins de siège reposent sur ces par- ties, le châssis et le treillis ne cèdent pas sous le poids qui y est placé.
La partie du treillis qui est tendue lorsque le châssis est replié., est dé- tendue lorsque le châssis est déployé en vue de supporter un matelas.L'ex- trémité non articulée de cette construction de support ou de la section des pieds vient en contact avec le châssis pour le supporter et une plinthe de garniture antérieure portée par une boite non déformable est incorporée dans le châssis.
Le but de l'invention est de procurer un châssis pliable pour sofa lit où la partie la plus éloignée du châssis forme, lorsque celui-ci est replié, une base pour le support des coussins de siège du sofa et consti- tue ce support., de même quun support pour l'extrémité non supportée de la partie éloignée du châssis lorsque celui-ci est replié dans la monture du

sofa; elle a aussi pour but de procurer un dispositif destiné à supporter élastiquement tous les côtés de la partie du treillis suspendue entre les pièces du châssis sur lesquelles repose le coussin de siège lorsque le châs- sis est replié dans la monture du sofa, et à supporter rigidement une plin- the de garniture qui fait partie de l'avant du sofa lorsque le châssis est replié dans la monture du sofa.

L'invention est appliquée à un sofa possédant une monture qui comprend des bras latéraux 1 et des pièces longitudinales arrière 2 montées

entre les bras latéraux 1 pour les espacer l'un de l'autre. D'autres pièces de raccordement appropriées sont établies entre les deux bras latéraux, com- me il est d'usage de le faire dans le métier et comme il sera décrit ci-après.
A chacun des bras latéraux sont fixées d'une manière appropriée des équerres 3, une équerre à chaque bras 1. A chaque équerre est articulée au moyen d'une broche 3a, une extrémité d'un bras 4, chaque bras étant pour- vu d'un coude à angle droit. Des barres 5 sont fixées chacune rigidement par une extrémité à l'autre extrémité de chacun des bras 4.

tandis que l'autre extrémité de chacune des barres 8 est articulée à une extrémité de chacune des barres
10 au moyen de broches 11. Les extrémités non articulées des barres 10 sont reliées rigidement ensemble en vue de maintenir celles-ci dans des positions relatives convenablement espacées au moyen d'une cornière 12 et une barre semblable 12a est reliée en travers de l'autre châssis entre les extrémités articulées des barres 5. Une pièce de bois servant de plinthe de garniture est fixée de préférence à la barre 12.
Les pieds ou montants de support 13 des barres 6, dont un seul est représenté, sont articulés à celles-ci en un point situé à proximité des pivots 9, au moyen de pivots 14 et des barres 15 sont articulées chacune par une extrémité à chacun des montants ou pieds 13 au moyen de pivots 16 situés à une distance appropriée des pivots 14. L'autre extrémité de chacune des barres 15 est articulée à chacune des barres de support 17 dont le petit bras est raccordé par un coude à angle droit au bras le plus long et l'ex- trémité extérieure de chacun de ces bras les plus longs est articulée au moyen de pivots 19 à chacun des éléments de monture 18 constituant une par- tie des bras latéraux 1. Des barres 17a et des contrefiches 17b (Fig. 14) sont montées entre les barres 17 pour que celles-ci puissent se mouvoir à l'unisson.
Des équerres à angle droit 20 pourvues de bras de renfort 21 sont fixées convenablement aux pièces de monture 18 faisant partie de chacun des bras latéraux 1. Des ressorts 22 sont fixés par une extrémité à une extrémité de chacun des bras 21 et les extrémités opposées de ces ressorts sont fixées à des broches 23 qui relient une extrémité de chacun des bras 15 à chacune des barres 17. Chacune de celles-ci est aussi articulée à chacune des barres 6 au moyen de broches 6a.
Des montants 24 sont articulés à chacune des barres 10 au moyen de pivots 25 fixés dans des supports appropriés assujettis aux barres 10,et des barres 26 sont articulées chacune par une extrémité à l'extrémité supé- rieure des montants 24, comme le montre la Fig. 2, au moyen de pivots 27, tandis que les autres extrémités de chacune des barres 26 sont articulées à chacune des barres 8 au moyen de pivots 28 fixés aux barres 8 en un point situé à proximité des pivots 11. Une équerre appropriée 26a est fixée à cha- cune des barres 26 pour limiter le mouvement de rotation des montants 24 par rapport aux barres 10 et 26.
La partie de l'armature pliante qui fait partie de l'avant du sofa est constituée par une paire de barres 29 une extrémité de chacune de celles-ci étant convenablement fixée à une barre 8, tandis que les autres ex- trémités des barres 29 sont rigidement reliées par des barres 30 auxquelles une plinthe de support et de garniture appropriée 31 est reliée. Un entretoi- sement diagonal des barres 29 et 30, peut si on le désire, être effectué au moyen de barres 32 placées diagonalement dans le cadre rectangulaire qui supporte la plinthe 31.
Un entretoisement convenable est assuré aux angles du châssis pliable au moyen de barres 33 dans la partie de celui-ci qui est située à l'intérieur du sofa et des barres plus courtes 34 sont placées dia- gonalement en travers des angles aux extrémités du châssis et un renforce.-

ment supplémentaire est prévu, pour le support rectangulaire de la plinthe de garniture, sous forme de barres 35 aménagées sur chaque extrémité du châssis de support de la plinthe 31. L'espacement longitudinal des barres 8 est assu- réau moyen de barres 41 montées entre les barres 29 en leurs extrémités.
Un support auxiliaire 36' est fixé aux extrémités intérieures de chacune des barres 10 et se prolonge au-delà de chaque pivot 11. Un autre support auxiliaire 36 est fixé à chacune des barres 8 entre les extrémités de celles-ci. Chacune des barres 26 présente un coude angulaire ou en gradin 26b à proximité du pivot 28, de telle sorte que la partie de la barre adja- cente au pivot 28 porte à plat contre les barres 8. Comme, le montre la Fig.
4, l'une des entretoises 29 du châssis porte-plinthe de garniture est située au-dessus du support auxiliaire 36' et sa face inférieure vient en prise avec celui-ci lorsque le châssis à sections du lit est replié à l'intérieur du châssis ou de la monture du sofa, en empêchant ainsi l'affaissement de l'extrémité non articulée au-delà de l'horizontale pendant qu'on opère le pliage. Lorsque le châssis est déployé comme c'est représenté sur les Figs.
1, 2, 9 et 10, l'extrémité de chacune des barres 26 qui dépasse les pivots 28 s'étend sous les supports 36, tandis que les extrémités de chacune des barres 6 qui dépassent les pivots 9 s'engagent sous l'autre extrémité de chacun des supports 36 pour renforcer le châssis et l'empêcher de s'affais- ser lorsqu'il se trouve dans la position déployée, tandis que lorsque le châssis est replié comme c'est représenté sur la Fig. 5,le support 36 se trouve dans la position verticale, son extrémité inférieure se trouvant en contact avec la barre horizontale 6 pour contribuer davantage à supporter l'extrémité non articulée du châssis à sections pendant l'opération de plia- ge et lorsque ce châssis se trouve dans la position repliée.
Un treillis métallique 37 est suspendu entre les diverses bar- res latérales 5, 6, 8 et 10 du châssis et y est relié par une série de res- sorts 38, dont une extrémité est agrafée dans des boucles formées aux ex- trémités du treillis et dont l'autre extrémité est accrochée dans des ouver- tures appropriées découpées dans ces barres latérales. Sur les barres laté- rales 10 sont aménagées des barres auxiliaires 10a auxquelles sont fixés des ressorts 38. Les extrémités du treillis métallique sont aussi supportées par des ressorts 38 dont une extrémité s'agrafe autour des fils métalliques des bords du treillis,tandis que l'autre extrémitéest accrochée dans des ouvertures appropriées pratiquées dans les barres d'extrémité 12 et 12a.
. Des mesures sont prises pour supporter le treillis métallique lorsque le châssis est replié à l'intérieur de la monture du sofa de manière qu'il y-ait un support adéquat pour la partie du treillis métallique sur la- quelle reposent les coussins lorsque le châssis est replié entre les bras latéraux 1. Ce support comprend une série de ressorts secondaires 39 dont une extrémité peut être fixée à une tringle 40 qui est reliée à une extrémi- té des fils métalliques transversaux du treillis 37, l'autre extrémité des ressorts 39 étant introduite dans une ouverture pratiquée dans l'une des bar- res 41.
Les ressorts 39 se trouvent à l'état de tension lorsque le châssis est replié dans le sofa, comme c'est représenté sur la Fig. 16, mais lorsque le châssis est déployé pour supporter un matelas, les ressorts 39 se trouvent à l'état détendu, comme c'est représenté sur la Fig. 15. Le treillis 37 suit les lignes de pliage des pivots du châssis, par suite de sa liaison à la barre 41, ce qui permet d'éviter son gauchissement lorsque le châssis est plié.
Lorsqu'on désire transformer le meuble pour en former un sofa au lieu d'un lit, on saisit la barre extérieure 12 et on la soulève de maniè- re à faire pivoter les barres 10 autour des pivots Il et on replie l'ensem- ble dans la position représentée sur la Fig. 3, où les montants 24 sont re- pliés contre les barres 10a. On soulève alors le cadre de support de la plin- the 31 et on l'amène dans la position représentée sur la Fig. 4 en faisant pivoter la barre 6 autour des pivots 6a, 7 et 9 et en faisant pivoter simul-

Lorsque les pivots 16 et 23 ont dépassé le plan vertical passant par les pivots 19, la plinthe 31 et le châssis auquel elle est fixée sont alors abaissés de manière à occuper la position représentée sur la Fig. 5, où la plinthe 31 se place dans le prolongement de la plinthe 42 et repose sur cet- te dernière qui fait partie du châssis reliant les bras latéraux 1 à leur base. La partie perpendiculaire des bras 17 supporte alors les extrémités non articulées des barres 10 et le ressort 22 se trouve sous tension de telle sorte que le châssis entier est rigide et se trouve dans les conditions vou- lues pour supporter les coussins, le meuble pouvant alors être utilisé com- me sofa. Le mouvement inverse des diverses pièces est exécuté lorsqu'on dé- sire ouvrir le châssis pliable de façon qu'il puisse supporter un matelas.
Une variante de l'armature pliable est représentée sur les
Figs. 17 à 19 qui en montrent l'extrémité non articulée. Un treillis métal- lique 44 est placé entre la barre d'extrémité 12 et la barre 41 montée sur le châssis de la plinthe de garniture au moyen de ressorts 43 reliant le treillis 44 aux barres 12 et 41 et aux barres latérales 10a.
Le treillis 44 s'étend sous la partie du treillis 37 entre le châssis de la plinthe et la barre d'extrémité 12 lorsque le châssis n'est pas replié, et lorsque la section à extrémité libre du châssis est repliée dans la monture du sofa, la section à extrémité libre se déplace d'une amplitude de 1800 en renver- sant ainsi les treillis de telle sorte que le treillis 44 se trouve alors au-dessus de la partie du treillis 37 située entre le châssis porte-plin- the et la barre d'extrémité. Les crochets des ressorts 43 qui relient le treillis 44 à l'armature ont été recourbés de haut en bas, de manière à empêcher qu'ils ne déchirent les coussins.
Du fait que le treillis auxili- aire 44 est relié à la barre 41 du châssis porte-plinthe et que ce dernier reste rigide par rapport à la section 8 des barres latérales, les ressorts 43 sont mis sous tension, ce qui a pour effet de tendre le treillis auxi- liaire 44 et de lui donner une surface unie sur laquelle on peut placer les coussins du sofa.
REVENDICATIONS.
1.- Sofa lit comprenant une monture de sofa; un châssis formé d'une série de sections articulées entre elles et repliables à l'intérieur de la monture du sofa ; cadre porte-plinthe non affaissable fixé à l'une des sections pour renforcer le châssis; un dispositif pour articuler une ex- trémité du châssis à sections à la monture du sofa, l'autre extrémité de ce châssis à sections n'étant pas articulée ; untreillis métallique suspendu par ressorts aux côtés du châssis à sections ; une barre s'étendant en tra- vers du cadre de support et fixée à celui-ci parallèlement à l'extrémité non articulée et écartée de cette dernière;
et un dispositif à ressorts pour re- lier le treillis métallique à cette barre et pour supporter le treillis lorsque le châssis à sections est replié dans la monture du sofa, le treil- lis suspendu entre cette barre et l'extrémité non articulée de ce châssis étant destiné à supporter des coussins pour le sofa.

SOFA BED.
This invention relates to sofa beds and more particularly relates to a construction which forms a support for the part of the foldable mattress support frame which is used as a base for the cushions serving as seats for the sofa when folded up. -'inside the frame of the latter.
The invention comprises a series of suitable bars hinged together to form a rectangular frame provided with a mesh of metal wires tensioned by springs, attached to the hinged bars which can all be folded into the frame of the sofa bed and. it is deployed the frame is supported by feet articulated to the frame of the extension, so that the frame and the trellis are capable of supporting a mattress. Arrangements are made in the frame so that when folded up some parts of the wire mesh are kept taut and supported so that the seat cushions rest on these parts, the frame and the mesh do not yield under the weight. that is placed there.
The part of the trellis which is tensioned when the frame is folded up., Is relaxed when the frame is extended to support a mattress. sofa; it also aims to provide a device for resiliently supporting all sides of the portion of the trellis suspended between the frame parts on which the seat cushion rests when the frame is folded back into the sofa frame, and for supporting rigidly a trim plate which forms part of the front of the sofa when the frame is folded into the frame of the sofa.

Right angle brackets 20 provided with reinforcing arms 21 are suitably attached to the frame pieces 18 forming part of each of the side arms 1. Springs 22 are attached at one end to one end of each of the arms 21 and the opposite ends of the arm. these springs are fixed to pins 23 which connect one end of each of the arms 15 to each of the bars 17. Each of these is also articulated to each of the bars 6 by means of pins 6a.
Posts 24 are hinged to each of the bars 10 by means of pivots 25 secured in suitable supports secured to the bars 10, and bars 26 are each hinged at one end to the upper end of the posts 24, as shown in Fig. Fig. 2, by means of pivots 27, while the other ends of each of the bars 26 are articulated to each of the bars 8 by means of pivots 28 fixed to the bars 8 at a point located near the pivots 11. A suitable bracket 26a is attached. to each of the bars 26 to limit the rotational movement of the uprights 24 relative to the bars 10 and 26.
The part of the folding frame which forms part of the front of the sofa is constituted by a pair of bars 29, one end of each of which is suitably fixed to a bar 8, while the other ends of the bars 29 are rigidly connected by bars 30 to which a suitable support and trim plinth 31 is connected. Diagonal bracing of bars 29 and 30, if desired, can be effected by means of bars 32 placed diagonally in the rectangular frame which supports plinth 31.

Additional ment is provided for the rectangular support of the trim plinth in the form of bars 35 arranged on each end of the plinth support frame 31. The longitudinal spacing of the bars 8 is ensured by means of bars 41 mounted between the bars 29 at their ends.
An auxiliary support 36 'is attached to the inner ends of each of the bars 10 and extends beyond each pivot 11. Another auxiliary support 36 is attached to each of the bars 8 between the ends thereof. Each of the bars 26 has an angular or stepped bend 26b near the pivot 28, so that the portion of the bar adjacent to the pivot 28 bears flat against the bars 8. As shown in FIG.
4, one of the struts 29 of the trim baseboard frame is located above the auxiliary support 36 'and its underside engages the latter when the sectional frame of the bed is folded inside the bed. frame or frame of the sofa, thereby preventing the non-articulated end from sagging beyond the horizontal while the folding is being performed. A wire mesh 37 is suspended between the various side bars 5, 6, 8 and 10 of the frame and is connected thereto by a series of springs 38, one end of which is stapled in loops formed at the ends of the mesh. and the other end of which is hooked into suitable openings cut in these side bars. When the pivots 16 and 23 have passed the vertical plane passing through the pivots 19, the plinth 31 and the frame to which it is attached are then lowered so as to occupy the position shown in FIG. 5, where the plinth 31 is placed in the extension of the plinth 42 and rests on the latter which forms part of the frame connecting the side arms 1 to their base. The perpendicular part of the arms 17 then supports the non-articulated ends of the bars 10 and the spring 22 is under tension so that the entire frame is rigid and is in the conditions required to support the cushions, the furniture then being able to be used as a sofa. The reverse movement of the various parts is performed when it is desired to open the foldable frame so that it can support a mattress.
A variant of the folding frame is shown in the
Figs. 17 to 19 which show the non-articulated end. A wire mesh 44 is placed between the end bar 12 and the bar 41 mounted on the frame of the trim plinth by means of springs 43 connecting the mesh 44 to the bars 12 and 41 and to the side bars 10a.

1.- Sofa bed including a sofa frame; a frame formed by a series of sections articulated together and foldable within the frame of the sofa; non-collapsible plinth frame attached to one of the sections to strengthen the frame; a device for hinging one end of the sectional frame to the frame of the sofa, the other end of this sectional frame not being articulated; wire mesh suspended by springs from the sides of the section frame; a bar extending through and attached to the support frame parallel to and spaced apart from the non-articulated end;
and a spring device for connecting the wire mesh to this bar and for supporting the mesh when the sectional frame is folded into the sofa frame, the trellis suspended between this bar and the non-articulated end of this frame being intended to support cushions for the sofa.
