no. @sense Speecaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July G, 1909.
Application filed .Tune 18, 1908. Serial No. 439,105.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, ii'iLLniM. ll. OLING, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county ol Charleston and State ol" South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful lniprovelnents in Beds, oi which the following is a speciiiication.
This invention is an improvement in in valid beds, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations ol' parts as will be hereinafter described. and claimed.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view oi a bed embodying iny invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof on about line 2f-2 oi' Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view oi" the bed, the head. section being raised. Fig. 4i is a sectional view oi" thebed, the head section being raised, and the 'foot section being lowered. Fig. 5 is a cross section oi the bed, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing one of the box supporting cross bars.
ln the construction shown the bed cornprises a middle or Inain section A, a head section B, pivoted at B adjacent to the main section, and a foot section C, pivoted at O adjacent to the inain section, so the head and toot sections may be adjusted between the diil'erent positions shown in the drawings.
The head section B, is provided. adjacent to its pivot D with a depending arin B2, and the section D has a depending arin CZ, and these arlns B2 and O2 are connected by links B3 and D with eccentrics D and E on cross shafts D and E', the links having straps Bi and C encircling their respective eccentrics D and E as shown. The shafts D and 'E' are journnled in brackets D"Z and E2 depending lroin the bed traine, and by the turning of the eccentrics D and l which may be eilected by suitable hand cranks F, see Fig. l, Y.fitting dctacha'rbly in sockets in the shafts D and E', the sections D and C may be adjusted to any desired position. as will be understood troni the accompanying drawings.
L7lhe bed bottoni it will be noticed may be of any suitable iorrn of spring G carried by the sections B and O and extending straight when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, but manifestly when the sections B and O or either ci thein is adjusted out oi alinenient with the section A, means should be provided to operate upon this continuous bed bottom G. To this end l provide a tension device in connection with the head and lioot sections. To this end the ioot section O is provided with an arln O5 extending in ad.- vance ol its pivot O so that when the foot section. is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 4, the said arni will put the bed bottoni under tension.
ln connection with the head section B, l. provide brace bars B5 connected at one end with crank arms il, on the shaft E and conneeted at their other or iront ends by a cross rod BG, which is connected by any suitable number of coiled springs B7 with the bed bottoni G at a point approximately over the pivot B oi the head section B. By this censtruction when the head section is raised and the Vfoot section is in its normal outstretched position shown in Fig. 3, the slack in the spring bed bottoni. will be taken up by the spiral springs B7, and when the toot section is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 4f, this will operate through the movement oi the braces to rclnove the tension ci the springs B7 in taking up the slack.
A box or support lil is carried at one side by swinging hangers l, and at its other side by swinging carriers J. rllhe swinging hangers l may be secured to the cross rods K in any suitable manner 4and the swinging hangers or carriers J are pivoted at their upper ends J to the slides J2 movable along the rods E and D by any suitable lneans, such for instance as a chain leading to the side of the bed so the slides J2 may be moved along the rods E and D to raise and lower the box ll. The box ll inay be utilized as a connnode a suitable opening being provided in. the inain section. A to perinit its use for such purpose.
l.. A bed. substantially as herein described consisting of an intermediate or inain section, head. and Al'oot sections pivoted adjacent to the intermediate or inain section, and provided. at their' pivoted ends with depending arms, eccentrics, and links connected with the arins of their respective sections and having straps encircling their respective ec centrics, a crank arm eccentrics oi the foot section, brace bars secured at one end to the said crank arins, a bed bottoln, and coiled springs between the other ends of the brace bars and the bed bottoni substantially as set forth.
2. A bed having a pivoted head section., an eccentric disk, a link connected with the said section and having a strap on 4the eccenin connection with the the pivoted end tric disk whereby it may be operated to adjust the section to different positions, substantially as set forth.
3. A bed having a foot section, an eccentric disk, a link connected with the said section. and having a .strap receiving `the disk whereby the latter may .be operated to tilt the foot section to any desired angle.
4. rlhe combination of a bed bottom, and i .a pivoted foot section having 1n advance of f section, head and foot sections piveted adl jacent to the main section and having at their movable ends upwardly proj eeting tions for the connection of a bed bottom, a bed bottom between said portions, an arm movable with the foot section and extending from the said section in advance of the pivot thereof and projecting below the bed bottom when the foot section is lowered, and springs connected with the bed bottom adjacent to ofthe head section for taking up slack inthe bed bottom when the head section is raised, substantiall)v as set forth.
6. The combination in a bed of a box or support, swinging hangers carrying one side of said box, swinging hangers carrying at one end the other side of the box, slides for the porlscribed, comprising a bed bottom, a mam other ends of the latter swinging hangers, and means along which said slides may be moved to raise and lower the box or support substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with cross rods and slides movable along the same, of hangers connected at one end with said slides and movable at such ends with the slides alongl the cross rods, and a box or support carried by the other ends of the said hangers, substantially as set forth.
8. A bed Icomprising a main section, head and foot sections, a bed bottom, devices adjacent to the pivot of the head section for taking up slack in the bottom, and means for operating said take up devices from the foot section when the latter is lowered.
9. rThe improvement in beds herein desection, a pivoted head section, a pivoted foot section having beyond its pivot a projecting portion adapted to be operated below the bed bottom when the pivoted loot section is lowered, devices adjacent to the pivot of the head section for taking up slack in the bottom, and means for operating said take up devices from the foot section when the latter is lowered.
