Abstract

774,448. Bed-settees; mattresses. POMPON, M. R. May 20, 1955 [May 21, 1954], No. 14678/55. Classes 52 (2), 52 (3) and 52 (4). A convertible divan-bed has seat and back frames pivoted together at 12 and supported on the ground by a system of links and castors. The seat frame has side members 10 joined by a cross-piece 39 while the back frame has side members 11 joined by a cross-piece 40. To each side member 10 are pivoted links 13, 14 connected at their lower ends by an angle bar 19 which carries, near link 13, a castor 20. A link 24 is pivoted to the rear of side member 10 and is connected to a lever 27 which is substantially vertical when the divan-bed is used as a divan. Links 14 and 24 are joined by a link 21. The lever 27 is connected to the side member 11 of the back frame at its lower end by a link 30 and at its upper end by a crutch member 33 to which it is pivoted near the side member 11. Castors. 35, 29 are provided at the lower ends of the crutch member 33 and the lever 27 respectively. When the back is lowered the crutch member then supports the back frame while the castor 29 provides additional support through link 30 in the region of the pivot 12. An extension 38 to side member 11 abuts link 24 when the divan bed is used as a divan and, with a locking bar 36 which engages the upper pivot of link 24, provides stability. The mattress is supported by interleaved metal strips 42, 44 connected to the frame by springs 43, 45 and strengthened by springs 46, 47 carried by cradle bars underslung between the seat and back side members 10, 11. Extending between an angle bar 41 joining the levers 27 and the front cross-piece 39 are further metal strips which, when the main mesh slackens as the bed is converted into a divan, tighten, and provide a firm seat support. A drawer 53 slides between the angle bars 19 and is intended for bedding &c. and the headboard of the bed which when in use is locked in place by the locking bar 36 (Fig. 4 not shown). Removable arm rests may be provided.
