COUCH AND BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1908.
Application filed November 5, 1907. Serial No. 400,825.
' T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK J. CROUCH and LoUIs A. CROUCH, citizens of the United States, residing at Seattle, inthe county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Couch and Bed, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the combination of furniture, and has for its principal object to provide a device of simple construction which may bereadily adjusted to osition for use either as a davenport or a bed? A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which on movement of the parts to form a bed, the seat cushion of the davenport will be elevated to proper height, and on folding to daven ort position the seat will be automatically owered as the back is raised.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this class in which all of the parts are so connected as to permit ready adjustment without danger of twisting or torsional strain as the parts move from one position to the other. Y
' With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the in-' vention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various'changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the s irit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Inthe accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as adjusted for use as a davenport. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts adjusted to position for use as a bed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts adjusted to osition for use as a couch. Fig. 4 is a detai ed section showing the pivot.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The fixed frame of the device comprises opposite end pieces 10, preferably formed of metallic tubing, and-connected together by front and rear horizontal tubes 11 and 12;
Two of the rear coupling pins 15 are provided with inwardly extending bolts 16, which pass through the end bars 17 of the back frame 18, and this back frame isso arranged that it may be moved to the hor1zon tal position shown in Fig. 1 when the device To the lower or inner portion of the frame- 18 is pivoted a second frame 20 which is used as, a seat of the davenport, and is adjusted into horizontal alinement with the back member as shown in Fig. 2, when the device is used as'a bed. Depending from the end bars of the seat frame 20 are two vertically arranged angle bars 21 which are rigidly held by braces 22 secured to the seat frame, the connection between the brace and angle bars being by means of pins 23, which are, also, employed as a portion of the locking device hereinafter referred to. These two angle bars are connected by longitudinal bars or straps 25, and longitudinal braces 26, in order to form a very rigid structure and to prevent movement of the end bars of the arms toward. each other under stress of a spring a, or similar brace used as a support for the mattress or cushions.
Pivoted to the end bars 17 of the rear frame are auxiliary sup orting legs 28 which are connected together y a transverse rod or tube 29, and this rod or tube 29 is connected to the rear tube 12 of the back frame by a pair of tubes 30 having end sleeves which form pivotal connections between the main frame andtlie auxiliary framethe length of these connections being the same as the distance between the pivot bolts 16 and the pivotal connections of the auxiliary legs with the back frames, so that parallel motion is insured as the parts move between the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Pivoted on the front tube 11 of the frame are two links 32 which are of tubular form and are of a length corresponding to the distance between the pivot bolts 16 and the hinges which connect the back and seat frames to each other. These links 32 are connected by an auxiliary tube 33 in order that they may move in unison.
When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the forward edge of the seat frame rests on the bar or tube 10, and when it is desired to adjustthe device to the position shown in Fig. 2 foruse as a bed, it is merely necessary to grasp and raise the forward edge of the seat frame, pulling slightly, forward on the same, and thus elevating the seat frame to the position shown in Fig. 2. This movement results in the turning of the back frame on its pivot bolts 16, the lower part of the back frame rising, and the upper part of the back frame moving downward until both the back frame and seat-frame are in the same horizontal plane.
In order to lock the frames in adjusted position, the back frame carries a pair of latch bars 40 having notches which receive the pins 23, so that the two frames will be firmly held in the ositions to which they may be adjusted. or convenience in movin the latch bars to release position, a flcxi le cord or chain 41 is employed, this preferably extending up toward the edge of the back frame, so that both latches may be readily moved to release position when the device is to. be adjusted from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1.
With a device constructed in accordance with this invention, the seat may be arranged at convenient height when used as a daven- 3 port, and automatically elevated to the or dinary height of a bed frame when adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2, While the end frames serve as arms for the davenport, and as head and foot frames for the device when r used as a bed.
We claim 1. The combination with a main frame, of a seat rest, bars depending therefrom, a
truss frame forming a reinforcing connection between said bars, a back rest pivoted to the seat member and to the main frame, a pair of locking latches pivoted to the back rest and arranged to engage with projections on the depending bars, auxiliary foot members for the back rest, connected links forming a swinging connection between the main frame and the auxiliary foot rests, and a pair of connected links forming a swingin connection between the seat member an( the main frame.
2. The combination with a main frame, of a seat rest, bars depending therefrom, a truss frame forming a reinforcing connection between said bars, a back rest pivoted to the seat member and to the main frame, a pair of locking latches pivoted to the back rest and arranged to engage projections on said depending bars, auxiliary foot members for the said back rest, a swinging connection be tween said main frame and said auxiliary foot rest, and a swinging connection between said seat member and said main frame.
In testimonythat we claim the fore oing as our own, We have hereto aflixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. CROUCH. LOUIS A. CROUCH.
