Abstract

656,703. Built-up masts. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1948, No: 31839. [Class 20(i)] A built-up mast, e.g. for electrical transmission wires, is of tapering form and comprises two or more principals composed of metal tubular members 2 coupled end to end by screw-joints, and spacing members 13 located at and secured by the joints of the tubular members.' Each member 2 may have a screw-threaded plug 5, Fig. 2, welded at each end, a stud 3 being tightly screwed into one of the plugs so that successive lengths 2 may be coupled by screwed spigot and socket joints. The spacers 13 may be dished sheet metal construction with apertures 14, Fig. 4, (not shown), through which the screwed studs 3 pass so that the spacers may be clamped between consecutive members 2. In a modification the studs 12, Fig. 3, may be carried by a plug 10 secured between an internal peripheral rib 9 in the member 2 and the turned-over end 11 of the member. The spacers 13 are so dimensioned as to rest within one another so that they may be conveniently coupled together for transport by a bolt passed through the centre aperture 18 of each spacer. The topmost spacer may carry an insulator 15B, Fig. 7, which screws into a nut 15C. The nut may be welded on the underside of the spacer and the coupling bolt may be screwed into this nut when the spacers are rested for transport. Crossarms 22 may be coupled to two of the principals by U-bolts 23, Fig. 8.
