Abstract

568,707. Electrical treatment of water. CROUCH. R. H. June 17, 1943, No. 9789. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for the electrical treatment of water in its passage through a main comprises a metal conduit section interposed in the main in an electrically-conductive manner at each end and having an electrode mounted in the interior thereof in an insulated manner, the external terminal of which is connected with an electric supply cable so as to be covered in an insulated and waterproof manner. As shown, a conduit section 1 is connected by its flanges Z into a water main and has mounted therein a number of electrode plates 10 disposed so as to give a generally cylindrical form, Fig. 2, and spaced slightly away from the conduit interior surface. The electrode plates are mounted on a terminal bolt 8 with spacing members 24 and the bolt passes through an insulating bushing 6 in a boss 3 formed on the conduit section 1. The bolt 8 is retained by a flange 9 engaging a countersunk portion 6<1> of the bushing 6 and being held down by a clamping plate 15 with interposed insulation 14, 14<1>. The electric cable 18 is connected to a socket in the top of the bolt stem and the joint is covered by a rubber sheath or the like 20. The electrodes 10 are provided with recesses 25 to give a turbulent flow or the electrode may consist of a metal tube flattened alternately at right angles along its length so as to give a turbulent flow, there being holes through the tube to permit flow to and from the exterior of the electrode, Figs. 4-6 (not shown).
