[Class 41] An electrolytic method of reducing the effects of hardness in a liquid consists in subjecting the liquid to uni-directional current transmitted by means of knife-edged elements separated from each other, the current being transmitted in series from the edges only of the elements. In the construction shown, a section of pipe 1 is provided with a central member in two parts 7, 7a of insulating material on which are mounted several spaced elements. Each element consists of an inner ring 4 and an outer ring 4a of insulating material, and a metal ring insert 5, the edges only of which are exposed. The elements at the ends of the central member carry flanges 8, 9 of insulating material and each flange has a recess to accommodate a spring-loaded contact terminal connected by a wire 15 to the insert 5 of the end element. The flange 9 is apertured for passage of the water to be treated. The contact terminals are connected to a source of direct current.
