Abstract
655,858. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. July 23, 1948, No. 19745. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1947. [Class 74 (ii)] Yarn from a supply, wound round a cylindrical cage 1 which is rotatably driven to feed the yarn to the needles of a knitting-machine, is engaged by a take-up arm or take-up arms 54, 55 which in the event of the yarn becoming slack, due to the withdrawal from the supply of more yarn than is required by the needles, decreases or decrease the length of yarn in engagement with the cage to reduce the frictional contact between the cage and yarn and thereby lessen the amount of yarn withdrawn. The cage is driven by a belt 13 engaging a pulley 8 on the cage and a pulley 14 on a driving-shaft 15 rendered operative and inoperative through clutch mechanism adapted to be operated by a cam drum, The take-up arms 54, 55 may be gravity-operated or spring- influenced and are positioned adjacent the cage so that the yarn extends round the cage and outside the arms. The movement of the arms is substantially tangential to the cage so that, they tend to swing towards each other when the yarn is taken by the needles. A cage for each yarn may be individually operated or two cages may be driven from the same shaft 15. Specification 596,351 is referred to.
