911,146. Knitting-machines. HOSIERY & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 10, 1958 [Aug.10, 1957; Feb. 1, 1958], Nos. 25314/57 and 3375/58. Class 74 (2). Positive yarn-feeding mechanism for a single or two-feeder circular machine comprises two cones 10, 11, one of which is gear-driven from the machine and the other being held against it by a solenoid 23, so that a yarn passing between them is positively fed without slip to the needles. The speed of feeding the yarn is predetermined in relation to the speed of consumption such that there is a satisfactory working tension imposed. When it is desired to knit the yarn without positively feeding it, such for example during the production of the welt of a ribbed sock, the cone 11 is moved away from the cone 10 by a spring 21, the solenoid being de-energized. Striping mechanism may be provided at each feeder and mechanism associated with the striping mechanism may be provided to introduce and withdraw yarns from between the cones in accordance with the dictates of the patterning mechanism selecting the appropriate guide of the striping mechanism at the feeder. In a twofeeder machine, one feeder may be operated in conjunction with severing and trapping mechanism independently of the other feeder so that one or both feeders may feed yarn positively or neither may have their yarns positively delivered but merely taken and drawn by the needles.
