Abstract

Yarn to be supplied to e.g. a circular knitting machine, passes in a loop around a high friction surface (pref. rubber) of a drive roller, the yarn being maintained in contact with the roller by an entry and an exit guide carried on a common support bar, so that rotation of the roller advances the yarn. The roller has an axial extension presenting a smooth surface and the support bar can be moved axially of the roller such that the guides guide the yarn around the smooth surfaced extension. In this position the yarn slips on the smooth surface and is not advanced by the roller. PreF. the support bar is actuated by a stop motion, on detecting a drop in yarn tension, to move the yarn to contact the smooth surfaced extension and arrest yarn feed. At shut down the yarn feed can be rapidly cut-off preventing over feeding of yarn which may cause the yarn to get entangled around the knitting needles.
