Abstract

629,258. Baskets. CULLEN, CARVER, & WILSHAW, Ltd., and CULLEN, P. C. June 18, 1946, No. 18306. [Classes 18 and 133] In a basket constructed of cardboard having the sides 2a, 2b and ends 3 inclined outwardly from bottom to top, a pair of flaps 8, 9 is hinged at 10 one to each side and adapted to be readily interlocked to form a handle or folded against said sides so that a number of baskets may be nested one within the other. As shown, the body is formed from one blank and flaps 8, 9 from two blanks having a marginal part 10 which is attached one to each side wall 2a, 2b. In use, the handle is formed by folding the flaps 8, 9 so that they overlap as shown in Fig. 3. Cutouts 12 are formed in each flap to accommodate the fingers and tabs 13, 14 are formed preferably by cutting inclined slots 15, 15a and 16, 16a in the upper margins of the flaps so that the tab of the flap 8 extends upwardly and the tab of flap 9 extends downwardly. Each inclined slot 15, 15a, 16 and 16a may be straight sided or curved and appropriate pairs thereof may be parallel or concentric; each slot also preferably terminates in a short straight slot or enlargement 17, 18 shaped as shown to provide short vertical walls 17a, 17b, 18a, 18b. On applying pressure to the side walls in an outward direction the short walls 17a, 18a of the flap 9 butt against the corresponding short vertical walls 17b, 18b of the flap 8 and thus inhibit movement of the side walls.
