Abstract

A synthetic resin composition having wetting properties and suitable for adhering natural or synthetic rubbers to each other or to textiles (cotton, nylon), glass, plastics, &c., comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a partly condensed mono- or polyhydric phenol-aldehyde resin, a water-soluble salt of a sulphuric ester of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having 8-20 carbon atoms, and a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having 6-12 carbon atoms with or without a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having 1-5 carbon atoms and a natural or synthetic rubber latex. There are specified: phenols-resorcinol, phloroglucinal, orcinol or mixtures thereof with other phenols; aldehydes-formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, furfural; sulphates-sodium sulphates of dodecyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, sperm alcohols, and alcohols obtained by reduction of the acids of oils and fats, potassium undecyl sulphate, and ammonium dodecyl sulphate; higher alcohols-2-ethylhexanol, octyl and dodecyl alcohols and mixtures of these; lower alcohols-methyl, ethyl, iso-propyl. The sulphate and higher alcohol may each be present in an amount of 0.05-2 per cent of the weight of the composition. In examples, there are added to a solution of resorcinol-formaldehyde condensate in caustic soda, alone or mixed with alkaline natural rubber latex or butadiene-styrene interpolymer latex, aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulphate and 2-ethyl hexanol, with or without ethyl or iso-propyl alcohol; sodium dodecyl sulphate, crude dodecyl alcohol, and iso-propyl alcohol; sodium cetyl sulphate and 2-ethyl hexanol; and ammonium dodecyl sulphate, 2-ethyl hexanol and methyl alcohol.ALSO:A synthetic resin composition having wetting properties comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a partly condensed mono- or polyhydric phenol-aldehyde resin, a water-soluble salt of a sulphuric ester of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having 8-20 carbon atoms, and a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having 6-12 carbon atoms, with or without a monohydric aliphatic alcohol having 1-5 carbon atoms and a natural or synthetic rubber latex.
