Abstract

Nylon yarn is sized with an aqueous alkaline composition (pH 6-10) containing casein, a water-soluble sulphonated phenol formaldehyde resin, a liquid non-drying long chain fatty acid, e.g. oleic or ricinoleic acid and a preservative. Suitable alkalies are borax, sodium carbonate, sodium phosphate, ethylene diamine or triethanolamine. Suitable preservatives are phenol, trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, or methyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoates. White mineral oil or arachis oil may be added to the composition. A swelling agent for the nylon, e.g. toluenesulphonamide may also be included. The casein preferably amounts to 4-9 per cent of the size by weight. The resin is 10-50 per cent of the weight of the casein and the lubricant (calculated as free acid) 10-30 per cent of its weight. The resin may be prepared as described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,237,405 and 1,254,364. Typical compositions are 6 per cent acid casein; 0.5 per cent sodium carbonate, 1.0 per cent oleic acid; 2.0 per cent resin solution (40 per cent solids); 0.2 per cent methyl p-hydroxyphenol, 0.1 per cent propyl p-hydroxybenzoate; 90.2 per cent water. Specifications 1,237,405 and 1,254,364. In the examples, sizes are applied on a single end sizing machine to yarns to be knitted. The sized yarn is dried in air and on its way to the needles passes through a bath of distilled water. A typical composition is 6 per cent acid casein; 0.5 per cent sodium carbonate, 1.0 per cent oleic acid; 2.0 per cent resin solution (40 per cent solids); 0.2 per cent methyl p-hydroxybenzoate; 0.1 per cent propyl p - hydroxybenzoate; 90.2 per cent water.
