Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile in the ratio of 95 : 5 to 30 : 70 respectively and at least 15 per cent of an arylamine-modified phenolaldehyde condensate. There are specified: phenols-phenol, naphthols, salicylates, resorcinol, catechol, hydroquinone, cresols, xylenols and alkyl-, phenyl- and halo-phenols; aldehydes-formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde; arylamines-aniline, toluidines, diphenylamine, N-methyl-, ethyl- and allyl-aniline, naphthylamines, alkyl - naphthylamines, cyclohexylaniline, phenyl aniline, aminophenols. The copolymer may be prepared by mass or emulsion polymerization of the butadiene and acrylonitrile, which is preferably in the ratio 55 : 45. The phenol-aldehyde condensate may be prepared by reacting the ingredients in the presence of alkaline or acid catalysts, e.g. barium or calcium hydroxide or acetic or formic acid. Other specified ingredients, which may be mixed with the copolymer before addition of the condensate, are: pigments-whiting, carbon black, calcium silicate, clays, kieselguhr, slate and fuller's earth; sulphur accelerators-mercaptobenzothiazole, tetramethylthiuramdisulphide, diphenylguanidine, di-(benzothiazyl) disulphide, morpholine, dibutylaminodithiocarbamate; solvents-acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, isopropyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl amyl ketone, or mixtures thereof. In examples, a copolymer (prepared by emulsion polymerization of a mixture of 55 parts butadiene and 45 parts acrylonitrile), sulphur, di-(benzothiazyl)-disulphide, and whiting are mixed in methyl ethyl ketone with resinous condensates of formaldehyde with aniline and phenol (with or without p-aminophenol or diphenylamine), resorcinol, p-phenylphenol, n-cresol, p-tert.-amylphenol or p-chlorphenol, with p-phenylene diamine and phenol, or with o-toluidine and phenol. Specification 569,666 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use instead of butadiene-1 : 3 of isoprene, 1 : 3- and 2 : 3-dimethyl and 2-ethyl-butadiene and instead of acrylonitrile of a -chlor-, a -methyl-, a -ethyl- and a - and b -allyl-acrylonitrile, without limitation of the relative proportions of these ingredients. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
