Abstract

In the treatment of textile materials composed wholly or partly of wool or other animal fibres with a solution of an alkaline material, e.g. caustic soda, in an organic liquid to reduce their tendency to felt, the materials are also given an improved colour, handle and resistance to abrasion by treatment with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde before, during or after the alkali treatment. Formaldehyde is preferably employed in aqueous acid solution, e.g. in solution in aqueous sulphuric or acetic acid and treatment with the formaldehyde may be effected before, during or after an acid neutralization treatment of the alkali-treated material. The alkali solution is preferably one of caustic soda in butyl alcohol or a mixture of butyl alcohol and white spirit. Numerous examples are given. Specifications 538,396 and 538,428 are referred to.
