Abstract
Natural or synthetic rubber latex is modified by reacting on the rubber particles with products from the hydrolysis in situ of an organo silicon ester in the presence of a protective colloid. The preferred colloid is neutralized caustic lignin such as the black liquid from paper manufacture neutralized with sulphuric acid, though casein, glue, alginates, pectins, dextrins, saponin, sulphonated fatty alcohols, or sulphonated oils such as sodium alkyl sulphates may be used. A halogen such as iodine may be added with the colloid. In examples, a natural or concentrated latex is dispersed with an aqueous solution of neutralized lignin and an emulsion of ethyl silicate emulsified with triethanolamine or sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate and the resulting mix is then used to treat textile fabrics, wood flour, asbestos, whiting, china clay, or cement, or is precipitated with alum or lime and the supernatant liquid removed, and the residual paste concentrated, e.g. by spray drying.
