Abstract
A vinyl siloxane is formed when vinyl triacetoxysilane is allowed to stand, acetic acid being the by-product. The silane may be applied to surfaces as a solution in water or organic solvents to produce, on drying, preferably with the aid of heat, a flexible waterrepellent non-tacky film of the siloxane.ALSO:Vinyltriacetoxysilane is prepared by reacting vinyltrichlorosilane with an alkali metal acetate. Solvents, such as ether, benzene, petroleum hydrocarbons and acetic acid, are preferably employed, particularly acetic acid mixed with acetic anhydride. The compound forms stable solutions in water and is used for sizing glass fabrics and for rendering materials waterrepellent.ALSO:Glass fabric is sized with vinyl triacetoxysilane, which may be applied per se or in aqueous or organic solution. The fabric is afterwards dried, preferably with heat, to produce a flexible film of cured vinyl siloxane on the glass.
