Abstract
Building blocks and the like are prepared by mixing "fly ash" (i.e., the precipitated ash from pulverized fuel plants) containing sufficient water only to reduce dusting losses during mixing but insufficient to cause cohesion, with a small percentage of portland cement and with just sufficient water to cause it to cohere when pressed, and pressing the mixture into blocks. Plastic clay, in amount between 0.5 and 1.5 per cent. may be included, preferably as a suspension in the water. The water may amount to 20-30 per cent. of the mix, and the cement to 5-20 per cent., preferably about 15 per cent. of the "fly ash". According to an example, 190 lbs. of "fly ash" are mixed in a concrete mixer with 34lbs. of cement, and 30lbs. of water containing about 5 per cent. of suspended clay are sprayed in. The mix is compressed in a mould, removed and allowed to stand to dry at atmospheric temperature. The blocks can be painted or colouring pigments can be incorporated in the mix, and waterproofing agents, such as aluminium stearate, soft soap followed by a wash with alum, or oleic acid, may be applied, or the blocks may be treated with sodium silicate.
