Abstract
Composite plastics are manufactured by reacting an alkaline solution of a polysulphide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal with such proportion of formaldehyde, or a compound thereof with an alkali hydrogen sulphite, as is also sufficient to react concurrently with a phenol, an amine or casein, or a mixture thereof, to produce a second constituent of different type in intimate admixture with the first constituent. The products may be used alone or with other plastics, e.g. in the preparation of rubber flooring, and may be added to rubber in order to render it resistant to oils or to increase its adhesiveness to rigid surfaces. In examples, formaldehyde is reacted with sodium polysulphide solution and phenol in the presence of ammonia. The Provisional Specification comprises also the reaction of formaldehyde, or a compound thereof with an alkali hydrogen sulphite, with a water-soluble polysulphide alone, and also with such a polysulphide and urea or thiourea. Additional examples describe the action of sodium polysulphide solution on formaldehyde and on its sodium bisulphite compound.ALSO:Indiarubber is rendered resistant to oils and its adhesiveness to rigid surfaces is increased by the addition of composite plastics prepared by reacting an alkaline solution of a polysulphide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal with such proportion of formaldehyde, or a compound thereof with an alkali p hydrogen sulphite, as is also sufficient to react concurrently with a phenol, an amine or casein, or a mixture thereof, to produce a second constituent of different type in intimate admixture with the first constituent. The plastics may be used alone or with other plastics, e.g. in the preparation of rubber flooring. According to the Provisional Specification there may also be used the reaction products of formaldehyde, or a compound thereof with an alkali hydrogen sulphite, with a water-soluble polysulphide alone, or with such a polysulphide and urea or thiourea.
