Abstract

The foaming tendency of alkaline mercerizing liquors is reduced, and their wetting power is enhanced, by incorporating in the liquors (a) the acid sulphate of 2-ethyl butanol-1 or a salt thereof, preferably in a proportion of 20-35 per cent of the mixture added to the liquors, (b) either (i) a sparingly water-soluble condensation product of an alcohol containing at least three carbon atoms, such as (a) substituted or unsubstituted, primary, secondary, or tertiary aliphatic alcohol, a cycloaliphatic alcohol, or a terpene alcohol or a mixture of terpene alcohols as contained, for example, in fine oil, with at least one molecular proportion each of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, or (ii) an acetal of such an alcohol, either constituent being present preferably in a proportion of 0.2-5.0 per cent of the mixture added, and (c) a solution promoter for the condensation product or acetal, preferably in a proportion of 3-7 per cent of the added mixture. In addition there may also be included (d) a minor proportion, with respect to the added mixture of the acid sulphate of an aliphatic alcohol containing 4-12 carbon atoms or a salt thereof (other than the acid sulphate of 2-ethyl butanol-1 or its salts), preferably the sodium salt of the acid sulphate of 2-ethyl hexanol-1, and (e) about 1-3 per cent based on the mixture added to the liquor, of an alcohol sparingly soluble in water, particularly 2-ethyl hexanol-1. A suitable sparingly water-soluble condensation product is 1-(b -butoxyethoxy-) propanol-2, obtained by condensing n-butanol in turn with one molecular proportion, each of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in that order. Suitable acetals are obtained from symmetrical secondary alcohols, and a specified example is di-isobutyl carbinol formal. As solution promoters, monoetherified polyethylene glycols, such as diethylene glycol monoethyl- or monobutyl-ether, are suitable. The compositions are suitably made up as aqueous solutions of the concentrations stated, which are then added directly to the mercerizing baths, generally in a proportion of 4 c.c. per litre. The mercerizing baths may also contain auxiliary substances such as phenols and generally comprise sodium hydroxide solutions of concentration 30-36 DEG B<\>e. They may be used at a temperature as low as 10 DEG C.
