Abstract

A glass-washing composition comprises an alkali and from 1-25 per cent, preferably 5-20 per cent, based on the weight of alkali of a polyol ether conforming to the formula: (HO)x-C6H8-[O(CnH2nO)z H]y wherein C6H8 is the hydroxyl-free residue of a hexitol, x is at least 4, y is at least 1, x plus y is 6, n is 2 or 3, z is 1 or 2, and y times z is not more than 2. The preferred compound of this nature is a monohydroxypropyl ether of sorbitol. The alkali of the composition is generally caustic soda, with or without up to 10 per cent by weight of anhydrous sodium carbonate. The compositions may be produced in solid or concentrated liquid form, but in either case before use are usually diluted to a 2-10 per cent aqueous solution. They may be employed in conjunction with such wetting agents as alkylaryl sulphonic acids and their salts, sulphated higher fatty alcohols, polyoxyethylene ethers of alcohols, alkyl phenols or fatty amines, suitably in a proportion of 1-5 per cent, based on the alkali.
