Abstract

A liquid detergent composition which is especially suitable when diluted for washing bottles comprises (a) at least one basic strong electrolyte, preferably an alkali metal hydroxide, in which there is stably dispersed (b) at least one non-ionic surface-active agent, e.g. an ethylene oxide condensate with an alkylphenol or with propylene oxide polymers, by incorporating (c) a water-soluble salt, e.g. the sodium salt, of a poly(acrylic acid). (a) is preferably caustic soda of a concentration of more than 10% (w./w.), and preferably more than 15% (w./w.). (c) is preferably the sodium salt of a copolymer of 4 proportions of acrylic acid and 1 proportion of an acrylic ester of an alcohol containing not more than 4 carbon atoms. Alkali metal, preferably potassium, silicates and polyphosphates, ethylenediaminetetracetic acid and its alkali metal salts, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and starch may also be included, and the composition may be made up as a concentrate which may be added to concentrated caustic alkali solutions when required.
