Abstract

Shaped solid detergent compositions comprise (A) a water-soluble salt of a soap forming C6 or more aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, and (B) 5-45% by weight of (A), of the anionic surfactant obtained by reacting 1 mole of P2O5 with 2.0-4.5 moles of the condensate of 1 mole of a compound containing at least 6 carbon atoms and at least one labile hydrogen atom and at least 1 mole of a C2-4 alkylene oxide. (A) may be a sodium, potassium, ammonium or amine (many specified) salt of an acyclic or cyclic carboxylic acid, e.g. stearic, linoleic, or abietic acid. The labile hydrogen-containing compound from which (B) is derived may be an alcohol, a phenol, a thiol, an amide, or sulphonic acid or a sulphonamide, example being given. (B) may be used in free acid form or as a salt of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonia, an amine, or the amine function of an ampholytic surfactant. The following optional additives are mentioned: sodium N - palmitoyl - N - methyl taurate, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol, starch, lignin, alginates, maleic anhydride/vinyl methyl ether copolymers, styrene, polyvinyl alkyl ethers, urea, zein, lecithin, lanolin, talc, borax, calcium chloride, sodium sulphate, sodium phosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, magnesium oxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and titanium hydroxide. The compositions may take the form of bars, tablets, pellets, rods, or ribbons.
