Abstract

549,451. Resinous condensation products. BARTLETT, R. G., MOILLIET, J. L., REYNOLDS, R. J. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 19, 1941, No. 6408. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Three or more fabric plies are bonded together by applying to one or more of the plies at least 70 per cent. by weight of a mixture of a polyvinyl alcohol and a water soluble condensate of formaldehyde and urea, guanidine or melamine or an alkyl ether thereof, wetting the other plies and pressing at a temperature not below 100‹C. while avoiding scorching. The polyvinyl alcohol is defined as a water-soluble partially or completely saponified polyvinyl ester, a 4 per cent. aqueous solution of which has a viscosity at 20‹C. of at least 20 centipoises. Suitable condensates are dimethylolurea or dimethylolurea dimethyl ether. A small proportion of an acid substance, e.g. ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, may be added. The invention may be used in the manufacture of collars, shirt fronts and cuffs. Ex. 5 describes the preparation of an aqueous solution of the dimethyl ether of dimethylolurea by refluxing urea, aqueous formaldehyde, methanol and sodium hydroxide and finally neutralizing with hydrochloric acid.
