Abstract

540,086. Resinous condensation products; stiffening textiles. TOOTAL BROADHURST LEE CO., Ltd., and CORTEEN, H. Feb. 1, 1940, No. 1948. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A fabric having a tendency to fold along a pre-determined line is made by applying a film-forming stiffening agent to an area along and including both sides of the line and then applying pressure with or without heat to the folded fabric first to the crease and then to the remainder of the fabric to expel more of the stiffening agent from the crease line than from the adjacent areas. Suitable stiffening agents are highly polymerized vinyl acetate and mixtures thereof with polymethylmethacrylate, or far-condensed urea-formaldehyde resins, and are applied in solid form or in solutions or dispersions. Preferably the film-forming material is applied to one face only of the fabric as a high viscosity liquid. Plasticizers, colouring matters and fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide, may be added. The fabric may be pre-treated with a filler or wax to prevent undue penetration. The pressure may be applied by passage through a mangle, hot ironing or squeezing between hinged plates. The example describes the preparation of a urea-formaldehyde resin in which the molecular ratio of urea to formaldehyde is 1:3.8, by dissolving urea in neutral aqueous formaldehyde, adding ammonia and paraformaldehyde and refluxing for a short time. After cooling slightly an aqueous solution of tartaric acid and o-cresol are added and refluxing is continued. Caustic soda solution is added to neutralize and, after cooling, tartaric acid and methyl cyclohexanyl phthalate is added as plasticizer. The invention is applicable to the manufacture of collars and cuffs, particularly the collar described in Specification 512,316, [Group VII].
