Abstract
A thermoplastic resin made by co-condensing an aromatic sulphonamide or a C-alkyl derivative thereof having at least two reactive hydrogen atoms attached to N and a formaldehyde condensate of melamine or an alkyl derivative thereof, or an alkanol modified methylol melamine, the melamine condensate containing at least two methylol groups and the amount of same not exceeding 50 per cent by weight of the sulphonamide resin when using a melamine derivative or an alkanol modified melamine, and not exceeding 20 per cent by weight when melamine is used. Specified sulphonamides are o-and p-toluene sulphonamides, benzene sulphonamide or the C-alkyl derivatives thereof. Examples 1 to 6 inclusive describe the preparation of the resin by (1) addition of a partially condensed melamine formaldehyde resin to mixed o- and p-toluene sulphonamides; (2) addition of melamine and formaldehyde to mixed o- and p-toluene sulphonamides; (3) heating together o- and p-toluene sulphonamide, paraformaldehyde and partially condensed melamineformaldehyde resin; (4) adding partially condesned melamineformaldehyde resin to a heated mixture of o- and p-toluene sulphonamide and paraformaldehyde; (5) adding melamine to a heated mixture of o- and p-toluene sulphonamide and formaldehyde; (6) mixing formalin and o- and p-toluene sulphonamide and heating to form a resin to which is added partially condensed melamine-aldehyde resin. The resin, having been ground at temperatures below 100 DEG C., is suitable for use as a pigment with dye or other colouring matter which may be fluorescent, incorporated therein. The dye may be incorporated with the resin: (1) during the cocondensation; (2) by dissolving the resinous product in a solvent, dissolving the dye in the resin solution and then evaporating the solvent; (3) by dissolving the dye in the molten condensation product; (4) by immersing the resinous product in an aqueous dye bath. The resulting pigments may be used as coating compositions or printing inks.
