Abstract
A propellant suitable for projectiles of the reaction-impulse type (or for assisting in the take-off of aeroplanes) is made by mixing a gas-generating powder with thermosetting artificial p resin in liquid form, cold-moulding the mixture, and then curing the moulded product by heat. The powder comprises an oxidizer such as sodium nitrate (50 per cent by weight) and a reducer such as ammonium picrate (50 per cent by weight). The resin may be the condensation product of formaldehyde with phenols, alkyl substituted phenols (such as tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl phenol), phenylphenol, melamine, substituted melamines; or may be polybasic acid-polyhydric alcohol condensation products, or a mixture of plasticised polyvinyl acetal composition with enough urea- or melamine-formaldehyde condensation product to make the mixture thermosetting. The resin is used in the partly condensed liquid state, with or without a solvent such as xylene, and may form 5 to 10 per cent by weight of the mixture of resin and powder. The mixture is pressed at 15-35 DEG C., and the resultant block is examined for microscopic cracks by painting with a dye. When the resin contains solvent, the blocks are partly cured by enclosing them in sealed containers (to prevent solvent evaporation and resultant cracking of the blocks) and heating in an oven at 60 DEG C. for 6-8 days, then fully cured in the open (without the containers) at 60 DEG C. for 2-4 days. When the resin does not contain solvent, the whole of the cure may be effected in the open. A phenol-formaldehyde condensation product may be made by condensing 1 mol. of phenol with 2 mols. of formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to a point at which the liquid resin has a viscosity between 500 and 10,000 poises at 25 DEG C. The alkaline catalyst is then neutralized and replaced by an acid catalyst and the resulting thermosetting material may be dissolved in xylene. The ratio of phenol to formaldehyde used in making the condensation product may be 1 : 1 or 1.2 : 1.6 (molecular proportions). The mixture of sodium nitrate and ammonium picrate accelerates the cure of the resin. Specifications 248,089, [Class 9 (ii)], 354,305, [Group XXI], and 579,058 are referred to.
