Abstract
Thermoplastic resins are prepared by condensing at a temperature up to 180 DEG C. a mixture consisting of a first component (A) consisting of either a mixture of formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and at least one aliphatic monosulphonamide or aralkylmonosulphonamide, the sulphonamide group being linked to the aromatic nucleus through an aliphatic chain as in benzyl sulphonamide and said monosulphonamide having two reactive amide hydrogen atoms, or a thermoplastic condensation product of these constituents, and a second component (B) consisting of either a mixture of formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and at least one melamine compound selected from melamine, alkyl melamines having no more than one alkyl substituted amido nitrogen atom and monhydric alkanol modified methylol and alkyl methylol melamines, or a thermoplastic partial condensation product of this mixture. The amount of component (B) must not exceed about 50% of the molar amount of component (A) but must be sufficient to render the product insoluble in aromatic hydrocarbon solvents. Pigments may be prepared from these resins by grinding them to a finely divided form and incorporating colouring material, which may be fluorescent, into the resin at any stage up to and including its production in finely divided form. The resulting pigments may be used in conjunction with e.g. alkyd resins, linseed oil varnish, styrenebutadiene copolymers or polystyrene-cyclized rubber mixtures to form printing inks, with e.g. chlorosulphonated polyethylene to produce paints and with e.g. a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and an epoxy resin to produce a moulding composition.
