[Also in Group VIII] A smart appearance is imparted to a garment or part thereof, e.g. a collar, of laminated construction by interleaving the laminate over one or more areas with a sheet or film of watersoluble adhesive and then damping and hot pressing the laminµ to partially dissolve the adhesive and cause it to flow into the interstices of the fabric to bond the laminµ together. The adhesive may be stitched in position, and may be starch, gelatin, glue, gum, an alginate, a water-soluble cellulose derivative, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid or one of its salts; the preferred material is naturally-occurring rice paper. Optional additions to the adhesive layer are: (1) hydrotropic or dispersing agents, e.g. a sodium alkyl sulphonate, (2) a lubricant or softening agent, e.g. glycerol, emulsions of polyethylene or silicones, fatty substances such as derivatives of stearic acid or cetyl alcohol and stearamide-modified condensation resins. The adhesive layer may be fixed or rendered insoluble e.g. by forming a water-insoluble resin in it before or during the damping and hot-pressing operations. The fixing agent or its constituents may be present on one or both of the fabrics with which the film of adhesive is in contact or may be applied separately, e.g. in the damping operation, or may be incorporated ir the adhesive sheet. In the examples, solutions of (1) dimethylolurea and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, (2) formaldehyde and phosphoric acid, and (3) water only, were sprayed on to pieces of cotton poplin; in each case, pieces of the treated poplin were placed on either side of a piece of rice paper and ironed to dryness. In the first two cases, the layers remained bonded when washed, but in the third case they separated on washing. The invention is stated to be applicable to the stiffening of either the collar top or band portion of a collar, the collar band of a collar-attached shirt, the neckband of a tunic shirt, shirt cuffs and blouse fronts.
