Abstract

Fluxes for use in welding or jointing aluminium or aluminium alloys contain in addition to another alkali metal chloride, lithium chloride, zinc carbonate, and optionally an alkali metal, preferably potassium-bisulphate. Cryolite may also be present and the flux may be applied either in powder or in liquid form, the salts of the flux in the latter case being incorporated in water. In the preferred compositions, zinc carbonate is present to the extent of 3-12 per cent, lithium chloride 10-18 per cent, and potassium bisulphate (when present) 1-3 per cent. The flux may be applied as a coating to aluminium welding rods.
