Abstract

In arc-welding cast-iron a normal mildsteel electrode is used in combination with a slag-forming mass comprising 5 to 20 per cent alkali and/or alkali earth fluoride, 15 to 50 per cent alkali earth carbonate, 5 to 30 per cent reducing metal powder and 5 to 30 per cent silicic acid. The slag mass contains less than 0.2 per cent by weight of moisture, is preferably inorganic, and if used as an electrode coating is pressed &c. on, to an overall diameter 1.6 that of the core. The fluoride may be complex, e.g. cryolite. An example comprises 22.5 per cent calcium fluoride, 45 per cent calcium carbonate, 13.5 per cent of a 23 per cent titanium ferro-titanium, 4.5 per cent of a 75 per cent silicon ferro-silicon, 4.5 per cent of an 80 per cent manganese ferro-manganese, and 10 per cent of dry water glass.
