Abstract
578,446. Fluxes. ANDREWS, W., and MUREX WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd., Feb. 14, 1944, No. 2691. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A welding rod is provided with a flux coating containing as a binding agent, sodium or potassium aluminate, the flux itself being preferably powdered mineral or other substances commonly used with a silicate binder. When the metal core is mild steel the aluminate may be used in conjunction with rutile, ilmenite or iron oxide coatings and for alloy steel electrodes, the flux contains calcium fluoride, carbonate or titanium oxide. The aluminate used may contain equimolecular proportions of sodium or potassium oxide and aluminium oxide ; when the aluminate tits a ratio of the alkali, oxide to the aluminium oxide greater than 1, it is rendered non-deliquescent by the addition of a sufficient proportion of an oxide of aluminium, titanium or zirconium to combine with the excess base. The coating may be applied to the rod by extrusion and dried by baking.
