Abstract
592,159. Boiler furnaces. WHITTAKER, W., and WORTHINGTON, J. V. May 24, 1945, No. 12971. [Class 51 (i)] A motorized fan unit fixed to a plate which is hinged to a furnace front plate and which has an opening coinciding with the ashpit opening, supplies air through the firebars of Lancashire or similar type boilers. Fixed to the plate E, which is hinged to the front plate at F and fastened by the latch M operated by the handle M', is a box housing in which is mounted the electric motor K and screw fan K'. Dampers N and O are fitted at the inlet end of the housing damper N being used to regulate the air supply by means of handle N<2> and damper O being closed automatically by the opening of the firedoor, thus affording protection against "blowback." In a modified arrangement the damper N may be automatically controlled by a reversible geared motor or solenoids operated to maintain a "balance" over the grate through a sensitive pressure diaphragm and mercury switch or other convenient means. Adjustment of the air supply may also be obtained by controlling the speed of the fan. Protection for the housing is provided by a guard plate above and a wire guard over the inlet.
