Abstract
584,893. Open-hearth furnaces. MORGAN, F. Feb. 2, 1945, No. 2686. [Class 51 (ii)] In an open-hearth or similar gas fired furnace, means, operated in unison with the furnace charging doors, are provided to supply a flow of air or inert gas into the furnace to cool the roof adjacent the back wall and to keep the burning gas down on to the bath of the furnace. Fan shaped apertures a, b, c, d are spaced along the top of a back wall e of the furnace and are supplied with air under pressure from pipes a<1>, b<1>, c', d<1> controlled by valves a<2>, b<2>, c<2>, d<2>. These valves are in turn controlled by the opening and shutting of charging doors h, j, k in the front wall m<3> so that when a charging door is opened the valve, or valves, opposite it is also opened. Instead of valves controlling a piped air supply, electrically controlled fans may be used. In a modification apertures are also provided in the side walls adjacent the back, and these are opened or closed at one end or the other according to the direction of flow of the burning gas. The valves a<2>, b<2>, c<2>, d<2> may also be thermostatically controlled.
