Abstract
691,923. Reduction of iron ores. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd. Aug. 30, 1951 [May 30, 1950], No. 13517/50. Class 72 In a method of controlling the silicon content of iron produced in a blast furnace, the blast is controlled in accordance with the indications given by an instrument responsive to the temperature either of the slag or of the furnace hearth. As shown, an indicating controller 11, which may be electric or pneumatic, operated by a pyrometer 8 in the slag or in the hearth, controls a valve 9 in a cold air line 26 to pass more or less cold air and so adjust the temperature of the hot air blast in line 24. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown); a second instrument responsive to the blast temperature opposes. the first instrument and prevents the blast temperature from being decreased, or increased, to too great an extent. Steam may be added to the blast under the control of a third instrument. Instead of automatic operation the valves may be manually operated according to the indicated temperatures on the instruments.
