Abstract
517,963. Blast supply to blast furnaces. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A. (Brassert, H. A.). May 11, 1938, No. 7545. [Class 72] [Also in Groups XII and XXXV] In a method of working blast furnaces changes in the rate of supply of air to the furnace and of the temperature of the air are maintained in a relationship which follows a predetermined characteristic curve. The rate of supply of air is controlled in accordance with the temperature of the air or the temperature of the air is controlled in accordance with the rate of supply of air. Apparatus for controlling the air supply in accordance with the temperature of the air near the tuyeres is shown in Fig. 1. A thermo element 10 in the hot blast main 6 near the tuyeres of the furnace 1 actuates through an electrical relay 11 a throttle valve 7 in the cold blast main 2 leading to the hot blast stoves 3, 4, 5 which communicate with the furnace by means of the hot blast main 6. The thermo element may also be connected to a relay which actuates a valve 8 in a by-pass 9 for admitting cold air to the hot blast main. The relay 11 may control a blower in the cold blast main 2. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which a meter 14 measuring the quantity of cold blast supplied to the hot blast stoves and furnace controls through a relay 15 a valve 8 in the by-pass 9 leading to the hot blast main 6.
