Abstract

1283790 Programmed control of flow JONES & LAUCHLIN STEEL CORP 26 Oct 1970 [10 Nov 1969] 50748/70 Heading G3N The flow of blast-furnace gas, natural gas and combustion air, for heating a stove for cyclically pre-heating air to a blast furnace is controlled in dependence on a predetermined programme relating the temperature of the dome of the stove to the time during which the gases are heating the stove. As shown, the flow-rate of furnace gas on a line 12 to a burner is regulated by a pneumatic valve 17, controlled electrically in response to the output of a transducer 10, measuring the difference in pressure across an orifice 11 through a squareroot determining device 13, by a proportional and reset controller 15. The supply of natural gas mixing with the furnace gas at a junction 42 is similarly regulated by a valve 41 operated by a controller 35, as is the supply of combustion air on a line 24 by a controller 20 and valve 26. The controller 15 is set for the desired furnace gas flow-rate by a device 14. The controller 35 is set by a temperature comparison circuit comprising a profile function generator 30 the output of which represents the desired dome temperature with respect to time. The output of the generator is compared with the dome temperature, as sensed by a device 31, by a controller 32 having an output proportional to the temperature difference which is fed to a potentiometer 33. The set output of potentiometer 33 is fed to the natural gas rate controller 15 through a device 34, which is responsive to the actual blast furnace gas flow-rate from device 13 to keep the desired natural gas flow-rate below a preselected percentage of the actual furnace gas flowrate.
