Abstract

1413046 Flare stacks JOHN ZINK CO 26 Feb 1973 [10 March 1972] 9309/73 Heading F4T A flare stack apparatus comprises a flare stack assembly having a flare stack and a conduit 10 for the supply thereto of combustible and potentially explosive gases, a temperature sensor 14 in communication with the flare stack assembly to determine the gas temperature therein, means 32 for supplying purge gas to the assembly downstream of the sensor 14, and means 16 responsive to the sensor 14 to control the rate of flow of said purge gas to be at a high or low rate as a function of the sensed temperature. A thermocouple 14 energizes a relay 16 when the gas temperature is above a predetermined level, whereby a solenoid valve 24 is opened to supply purge gas from pipe 26 via pipes 27, 32, a low flow rate of purge gas being supplied constantly from pipe 26 via metering means 30 and pipe 28. The valve 24 may alternatively be activated by a bimetallic temperature, or by a liquid-filled bulb and capillary type sensor. The temperature sensor may be located in a thermometer well (52), Fig. 6 (not shown), let into the stack or supply conduit 10 through the wall thereof transverse to the flow direction therethrough. Alternatively the temperature sensor may be located on the outside wall surface of the stack or supply conduit, or it may extend transversely of the flow direction in the stack or conduit into a shielding area formed by two or more coaxial tubes (63), (64), (66), Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), located coaxially in the stack or supply conduit.
