Abstract

1376805 Temperature measurement DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORP 6 Nov 1972 [14 Feb 1972] 51121/72 Heading G1D [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for selective insertion in a combustion region 10 to determine the temperature thereof comprises an elongated tube 18 forming at least part of a soot blower assembly 20 through which a fluid under pressure is allowed to flow, the tube being provided with a restrictive orifice 19 at one end and being connected to pressure and fluid-flow detectors 40, 52 which provide indications corresponding to the temperature. As shown, the soot blower assembly 20 is slidable along a track 22 to vary the penetration of the tube 18 in the combustion region 10. The orifice is in the form of one or more nozzles 19 which is supplied with gas under pressure from a supply pipe 32. The supply pipe 32 which is connected by way of a poppet valve 30 and feed pipe 28 to the tube 18 is provided with pressure and temperature indicators 62, 61 and also an orifice plate 51 which is sandwiched between flanges 54 connected to a manometer 58 to provide indications indicative of the gas rate of flow. A gauge 40 connected by way of a surge tank 46, a valve 44 and a conduit 42 to the tube 18 provides an indication of the pressure of gas in the tube 18. In an arrangement for controlling the quantity of unvaporized water to be directed by the tube 18 to the combustion region in accordance with the temperature of the latter, the tube 18 and feed pipe 28 are connected by way of valves 92, 88 Fig.2 and a conduit 86 to a water supply pipe 82. The pressure of gas supplied to the tube 18 through the gas supply pipe 32 is sensed by a pressure transmitter 94 in connection with a controller 90. The controller 90 compares signals indicative of gas pressure and the rate of flow of water and accordingly adjusts the valve 88 in the water supply conduit 86. The controller 90 may be connected by way of leads 112, 114 to an alarm for indicating no flow in the tube 18 and devices 78, 80, 84 may be provided for indicating fluctuations in the supply of the gas and water.
