The discharge opening 4 at the foot of the ramp 9 of a continuous heat treatment furnace is closed by an upwardly pivoted door 17 associated with a hollow lintel 10 having a slot 16 extending across its full width through which some of the combustion gases from adjacent burners in ports 7 and cold air tending to enter the opening when the door is open are exhausted by a fan under control of a butterfly valve. The double walls 11, 12, 13 and 14 of the lintel are water-cooled.
