563,485. Maintaining furnace atmospheres. RICHARDSON, P. S., and WILDBARFIELD ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1943, No. 1893. [Class 51 (ii)] In heat treatment furnaces having means for maintaining the furnace atmosphere when the furnace door is open, such as by providing a sill at the furnace entrance through which a controlled supply of gas is provided to form a curtain, the output of the plant supplying the furnace atmosphere is also controlled. As shown in Fig. 1, the plant 1 producing the atmosphere, such as a charcoal burner, is supplied with compressed air by a pipe 2 and the sill 4 of the furnace is supplied with atmosphere from the plant 1 by a pipe 3. Valves 7, 7<1> in the gas supply pipe 3 and air pipe 2 are controlled simultaneously by means such as a lever or other device 6. A small steady flow of gas is maintained by providing the valves with adjustable stops to prevent the valves being closed completely. Stop valves 8, 9 are provided in the pipes 2, 3 for shutting off when the furnace is not in use. In a modification the valves 7, 7<1> are provided with byepass pipes and may be shut down completely when the furnace door is shut, a small steady flow of gas being maintained through the byepass pipes. The atmosphere producing plant may be associated with a number of furnaces.
